A prestigious honour in the industry, the Martin Barnes Awards are presented by the New Engineering Contract (NEC) Users' Group under the Institution of Civil Engineers of the United Kingdom. The awards recognise construction projects, organisations and individuals worldwide that have demonstrated excellence in project delivery through collaborative partnership.
The Outstanding NEC Team Performance Awards (“Awards”), organised by the Development Bureau, aim to recognise outstanding project teams of construction / maintenance works in Hong Kong, which have exemplified the core NEC principles of mutual trust & cooperation to enhance project performance through effective collaborative partnering.
The NEC engineering and construction contract (ECC) Hong Kong Edition, launched by the Development Bureau in 2023, is the only location-specific edition outside of the United Kingdom. Its main purpose is to broaden the scope of collaborative contracting in local construction projects by blending Hong Kong’s practices with the original NEC clauses. It introduces the Secondary Option Clause X30 for innovation and technology, encouraging contractors and project managers to propose solutions that enhance project performance and sustainability.
A new series of tailor-made NEC workshops has been launched for project staff, site supervision personnel & QS officers from project departments, consultants and contractors.
DEVB and its Works departments piloted different new technologies in NEC, such as the DEVB’s self-developed and international award-winning “SmartEye”, which is a remote project supervision system cum integrated site management platform. It aims to achieve early detection, timely follow-up and swift resolution in site supervision, ensuring construction quality and safety while effectively managing on-site high-risk construction works. This system is currently being used in some public works projects.
